Pardon my rant, please skip this post. . .
I dont know where else to vent so I’m gonna do it on my blog and perhaps save some people from falling for one of their “deals” which I’m embarassed to say I did. (or hope it get indexed by Google so when someone searches on Wirefly they land here . . . and cause them to lose a couple of sales. . . thats see if thats worth trying to screw me over for a few hundred dollars).
Over a year back I bought a ROKR from them (again I’m embarassed to say I’m one out of the 100 people that actually bought one). At the time I thought, hey just like Amazon, after rebates the phone is free. . . . I should have read the disclaimer they put in 8 point font.
Well, once I recieved the handset I realized I could not send in the rebates until 180 to 210 days after activation. I knew I was tricked and tried to refund the phone but they asked for a fucking re-stocking fee. I was stuck and thought I’ll just have to be diligent and remember to send the rebate within the 30 days freaking window that they give you after a whole 6 month of waiting. (pardon my french).
Its kinda of obvious the game of slippage they are trying to play. . . not exactly the most ethical business practice already . . . and probably illegal with their lack of visible disclaimer and re-stocking fees.
The worst part came when I diligently saved all the boxes, cutouts & reciepts and sent in the rebate forms (BTW why are there 2 rebates in 2 envelopes for the same damn purchase? Why are they called “customer loyalty rebates” . . . they are just pissing on my grave at this point) and patiently waited. I got an email from them saying that they are processing the forms a few weeks after I mailed it in. After that. . . dead silence. . . again they are betting that I would forget about the rebate. Unfortunately for them, I’m a cheap bastard and keeped on emailing and calling them.
After quite a few non-responses, they told me that my rebate was dated 11 days too late. . . after waiting 6+ months, they are telling me that I’m 11 days too late? I’ve been 11 days late on my credit card bill and not get charged interest because I’m a long time customer !!! So now the only way to get my rebate is to send it “proof” of mailing date. Who the fuck mails rebates in certified mail? ARGH . . . the worst part is I have no idea if I am 11 days too late . . . I’m pretty sure I wasnt, but
So there you go, I’m out close to $300 bucks. . . (yes, I’m a dumb fuck, I could have just straight out bough the phone $100 but I tried to get it for free . . . not withstanding “time value of money”) . . . now that I’m worked up again, I’m going to call them and complain again. . . I promise to use up atleast $300 worth of customer service cost
On a more serious note, I dont think these guys understand that on average customer retention cost is significantly lower than acquisition cost for a new customer. To make me jump through hoops like that is a definite a drain on my satisfaction and loyalty. They will have to rely on new cusotmer acquisition for revenue growth rather than repeat customers. Furthermore, given that they are an online company reliant on search marketing as the key driver of their business, it is not wise to piss off customers who can just write a post on a blog or BBS and complain. When someone types in “ROKR Wirefly”, they will eventually be served up organic results with the title “Wirefly Sucks” along with their ad on the right hand side . . . at that point, who is going to buy more phones from them?
to think of it. . . hmm . . . I’m gonna make my money back by shorting their stock . . .

Which phone?

Just 2 weeks ago, The Cranky Product Manager nearly bought a spankin’ new Blackberry from Wirefly.com. After all, the prices seem great and the website is so professional. Fortunately, prior to ordering, she checked with the Better Business Bureau and found that wirefly.com (also known as InPhonic) had nearly 1400 complaints filed against it in just the last 12 months. Also, the BBB revoked their membership in 11/2005 for “failure to maintain the principles and standards required for membership.” Furthermore, on epinions.com, the overwhelming conclusion is that the wirefly.com’s rebates are a scam and they rarely, if ever, honor them.
Sorry this one bit you, and thanks for warning other people.

They are complete and utter ripoffs who will not pay rebates. DO NOT BUY FROM THEM UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

The phone came on time. This is the only thing they actually did right. They failed to honor their rebate commitment. I would never recommend them to anyone. Beware

Hi, Will:
I’d like to try and help resolve your Wirefly rebate situation. Can you e-mail me directly with your order number? I’ll look into your account and do my best to help out.
Also, I’d like to explain the rationale behind the 180-210 day window of time. When we acquire new customers for the major, established cell carriers, we receive a commission from those companies– but only after the customer has remained in good standing for at least six months. Once we receive that commission, we pass the savings on to the customer; that’s one way we’re able to offer such steep discounts.
If you have any other questions, please send them my way. And again, I’d be glad to look into the status of your rebate submission.
Thanks,
Jon Delahay

Give credit where credit is due, I recieved the follow from WireFly:
“Hello William,
We have received your most recent inquiry regarding your rebates.
Our records show your rebates were denied because they were post marked to late. Please be advised this matter has been reviewed by our Corporate Offices and although your rebate(s) was denied, as a valued customer we will honor the rebate(s) as one time courtesy. An expedited payment request has been escalated for processing. Please allow 7-10 business days for processing. Your rebate check will be mailed to the following address”
Lesson? Squeaky wheels gets the oil. . .and blogging helps save money
for all the people that feel ripped off, feel free to email me and I’ll give you my blog space to complain so you can get your money back. Wirefly can be reponsive to customer needs if they so choose. I hope this is the first step is rebuilding their brand.

I -being a not too bright person- ordered a cingular cell phone over the internet. little did I know that my phone was coming from -not cingular-but a place called wirefly–When a month later I was getting no reception I called cingular at which time they sent me a new phone. It changed nothing so after trying for 3 weeks and no better reception I called cingular again — they told me this time that I lived in an area where reception was not possible and if I returned my phone to a cingular store they would cancel my contract. The cingular store would not take the phones because they had been ordered over the internet and gave me a number to call -Wirefly
In the end cingular has cancelled my phone and wirefly wants to charge me 250.00 to get out of a contract and I MAIL THE PHONE BACK TO CINGULAR!!! I am confused if wirefly is charging me 250.00 for the phones why do I mail them to cingular??????

after 210 days my rebate was approved by wirefly or rebates.com or whatever they call themselves. I thought I would have my check within three to four weeks; well eight weeks later I call them back to get a recording saying even though my refund had been approved that they were reviewing all rebates as due to an error in the system. They owe me four hundred dollars and have been doing this review since July; I still cant get anyone to answer the phones. An attorneys that read this should start a class action law suit against wirefly. T

$250 for cellphone box?????????????
this is insane..i bought a phone sony ericson w810(for $110) couple of months back.within 2-3 weeks of its usage,i found it is a defective one,so i called them and asked for a replacement.they sent me a new piece and charged me again $110 without my approval on my credit card. They told me that they will credit that money back when I return old phone.I returned the older one and waited for 4 weeks but they dint reimburse my money. When I called them regarding this, they told me that the shipment was received in a ‘rejected condition’.when asked for details they said the outer box(sony ericson’s) was missing in which the cell phone supposed be in.I wondered wat type of material that the box is made of???Platinum ???
To my surprise they said that the actual price of the box is $250!!!I had to call them many times to speak to a rep.they put u on hold when ever they like withour ur consent.
I ve never faced such an irresponsible customer service in my life..
Pls dont buy no phones from them

Wirefly.com is a rip off job. I complied perfectly with their rebate technicalities and, yet, they still refused to give me a one hundred dollar rebate. It was clear to me after numerous contacts with them that they were stringing me out and hoped I’d go away. They are crooks and need to be sued for exemplary damages.
